The music ministry of Antioch Baptist has a rich heritage dating back to the organization of the church in 1826. Worship music revolves around the Baptist Hymnal (1991 edition) in addition to congregational hymn arrangements from the Celebration Hymnal.
The sanctuary choir includes thirty-seven volunteers who range in ability from professionally trained voices to folks who do not read music, but have a love of singing and a sense of pitch and timing. Choir members range in age from middle school through senior adult.
Choir selections include traditional anthems, gospel arrangements, and occasional contemporary pieces. The sanctuary choir sings during each Sunday worship service and rehearses on Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM. Soloists and vocal ensembles also provide occasional worship music.
The sanctuary choir is under the direction of Shelia T. Austin, a retired public school administrator, who has served in this role since 1969. Shelia has been a member of Antioch since the early 1950’s, and plays an active role in planning and directing the music for worship services.
Special performances by the sanctuary choir include musicals for occasions such as Easter, Christmas, and patriotic events. From time to time the choir invites instrumentalists both from within the church and outside to assist with musicals and worship experiences.
Antioch is most fortunate to employ two musically trained instrumentalists who play during the Sunday worship hour. Brenda Robertson, organist and choir accompanist, is joined each Sunday by Jody Frye on piano. The music ministry also includes an occasional handbell choir when ringers are available.
Other musical opportunities include a Preschool Choir which meets on Sunday morning from 9:45-10:00 AM, and Kids Choir which meets on Sunday from 5:30-6:00 PM for kindergarten through sixth grade.
